Student project: Prototype design for research and development setups

OnePlanet Research Center/imec is using internally developed and built setups to support our research projects. Such a setup can be a complete prototype including lasers, sensors and actuators or a device used to assist during research or development.
For our Smart Bathroom for Health initiative, we are working on several projects where you can contribute by exploring the needs, the possibilities, experiment and build setups. For example a setup to mimic aspects of the human body to emulate in a controlled and repeatable way the biomarkers we want to measure electrically or optically.
Your work involves:

  • Brainstorm with the researchers to create innovative solutions for the test setups, tools and demonstrators they need.
  • Designing these in SolidWorks or assist researchers creating their designs.
  • Use our mechanical workshop to build the setups (3D printers, CNC Milling, Drilling)
  • Experiment and iterate with the colleagues to improve to prototypes and join them when using your setups with field test and laboratory activities.
  • Order material and components, outsource specialized work.
As it is a very practical internship, experience (hobby) with building parts (3D-print, construction), programming or using electronic sensors and actuators is an advantage.

What we do for you

In this internship you will have the opportunity to contribute to innovative research and be an important member of our multidisciplinary development team. We have an electronics lab and a mechanical workshop to support you. And you can learn a lot from the colleagues, but we also expect to learn for you.

Who you are

  • A Bachelor or Master student (HBO or WO) in product design, mechanical or mechatronics engineering or a related field.
  • Very hands-on and be able to work with milling and drilling machines and 3D printers.
  • Electronics and optical knowledge can be an advantage
  • Both Dutch and Englisch speaking for local supplier contacts
  • Pro-active, outreaching mindset and eager to learn
  • Enjoying working in a team
  • Available for 6 months
